You can catch any pet, it doesn't have to be unique or even something you keep. If you want to you can in fact just capture a lot of level 1 pets in your favorite starting zone and delete them right away as you catch them, although that's a bit of a waste of a lot of potential pets :)

According to WarcraftPets, the only minipets you can't battle with are the humanoid children models (like the guild page), and the Guardian Cub. (http://www.warcraftpets.com/news/pet_battles_trading_limitation/)
