This is some of the strange PVE achievements, which have PVP written on them. Unfortunately - it is required for Expedition Leader, so ....
The only experience I can share is:
1. On most runs - there is no PVP at all. The team which can mop up the place faster is the most likely winner.
2. Do not be afraid to queue with strange compositions and tactics. You will win something at the end. I won some by simply pulling everything and kiting, while my teammates mined every available node, while our enemy team quited after we got a 6000-1000 head start.
3. Remember - doing PVP island expeditions is actually a very good way to farm azerite for the weekly quest, pets for I'm Here for the Pets, mounts and conquest points (outside ranked play)

Just in case anyone came here looking for the answer to if you can solo queue/random queue for the PvP islands - no you can't sadly.
Thankfully as of patch 11.0.7 Notorious alongside Island Slayer are no longer needed for the meta A Farewell to Arms
