Afterwards head into the inn right nearby and go to the upstairs down to the last bed.
On the floor is a pet bed and a dog toy. Pick up the dog toy and take it to Marmaduke.Marmaduke is wandering the island in the area just outside the main hub.
I found him @ 59,49 just near the tracks. If you dont see him just wait there.Once you find him talk to him and interact. He will disappear then reappear and run back to the main hub.
Find him in the middle of the hub and do his little quest and you will unlock him as a battle pet. Congrats.

I found him under the deck near the inn where you get the squeaky toy
