After breaking the chain, they will either:
- go away peacefully and you get credit
- blow up
- turn aggressiveYou only get credit for the peaceful ones. Be prepared to break two or three times more chains than the 8 needed to release
Ah, yes, I love quests where an interaction will sometimes randomly not give you credit, because RNG decided it to be so. I just had to interact with, I swear, an upwards of 18 or so soul snares because they kept turning hostile.
There's a daily quest in The Maw that has you interacting with trapped souls, and they have a chance of turning hostile. But killing the hostile soul still grants you credit for the quest. I don't see why they couldn't have done the same thing here.
Do yourself a favor and find a different world quest to do, as this one isn't worth the time.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.
