He's actually on the ground above the cave. I was looking through the cave before I read the quest.

I found the cat at coordinates 64, 19.5 (a little behind and northeast of the cave entrance at the Kurzen compound). You kill him again at his lair for the second part of the quest (Follow that Cat) which is at the small cave in the bottom right corner of the map above the triangular shaped lake. You get the panther pet reward in the lair. The cat is outside the lair, the dwarf is inside.
