This is easily the most frustrating quest I have ever encountered. (I'm trying it with my undead warlock level 47 main, though.)

I literally lost track of how many times I died trying to kill bloody Kalaran. It was at least five. But the guardians aren't completely useless...

What I did was stand in an area that was as clear as possible of raging whelps and soldiers, and I mean clear as in all of them would have been out of range had I tried to make a ranged attack. I attacked Kalaran (with a spell; I don't think anyone cares which one) and as soon as he tried to attack me, I told Gargal to do his "mighty shout" to draw the dragon's attention and got the hell out of the way. I kept ordering the guardians to attack, and if I ever attacked him myself and drew Kalaran's aggro, I got Gargal to shout again to take the attention off me.

I did get attacked by one of the raging whelps during the successful attempt at the quest (i.e., finally killing Kalaran), but I cast Bane of Agony on it and it ended up fighting with the demon imp the bane summoned and left me alone. If I hadn't been a demonology warlock, I'd have been screwed. This quest is a massive pain in the ass.

Zhanniespal, was the Eastern Plaguelands frustrating quest trying to kill Ix'tar, by any chance?

I did this quest WITH ALL THREE GUARDIANS INTACT and still could not kill Kalaran the Annihilator. I am a level 47 Druid. I could not complete this quest without the help of my son and his level 85.

Three things happened that caused this quest to fail for me several times:

1. While staying on top of it and self healing, I ran out of mana and died anyway.

2. Darkflight Soldiers and those baby dragons mobbed us in mid attack. Too much to handle.

3. Ok, so then kill the Soldiers and the baby dragons first seemed like a good strategy. But then Kalaran starts to attack just as I am finishing clearing the area and my health and mana are already low. No time to sit and drink Moonberry juice. Yup, die again.

This exact same thing happened while questing in the Eastern Plaguelands on another quest. Cannot remember which character I was tryng to kill, though.

Here are some tips for using the mercenaries:

  • When using them, my warlock pet went away. Not sure if this applies for hunters as well? You can't have them both out at the same time.

  • If you are a ranged attacker, they'll do their special attacks on command but they won't auto-attack unless you get near the enemy.

  • They disappear in certain areas... I think if you get too far from New Kargath or the quest area.

  • If they die in combat, they will not rez until you've finished fighting, but they'll come back with full health and mana.

  • If you mount up, they hop on motorcycles. (:

Description

Hello, {name}. It looks like you four have had time to become well-acquainted. I have my first assignment for you. Kalaran, an ancient black dragon of considerable power, has joined in the hunt for the egg we are protecting. We need to stop him before he gets too close. You will find him and his minions at the Dustbowl, east of New Kargath. Hunt him down and defeat him. You will likely need the help of your new mercenary allies.

Where this quest fits

Before this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Gargal, the BehemothBadlands · Level 15-30

You may not have noticed, but I'm pretty big, as far as orcs go. I make sure that my two pals here don't get into too much trouble. They're small, and they don't have a big shield like me. I'm big, and I can handle a few monsters hitting me!

After this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Their Hunt ContinuesBadlands · Level 15-30

The black dragonflight means business. As you've probably already noticed, they've taken over a large portion of New Kargath. These troops are under the command of General Jirakka and his champion, Moldarr. They must be stopped.
