Best advice I got was to save up vigor. Instead of using it almost on CD, just keep your speed initially above 900, only using when you drop below. When you have 4-5 vigor, start using them, and keep using them so you stay at max speed. This helped me so much.
I had multiple races where I was far from the gold and had spent more than 10 tries, ending up skipping them. When I was told about reserving vigor and changed my tactics, I was one shotting almost all those I skipped, and a few with 2-3 tries.
This is a great example of what I am talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6frHPPapGmE
The Un'goro Crater one seems to be the one people are having the most trouble with. For me, the key was to tilt the camera upward briefly when using Skyward Ascent. While the animation of Skyward Ascent is happening, gravity won't slow you down, so by doing this you can get some extra height that can then be turned into downward momentum. To be more specific, sometimes when the course ascends, levels off briefly, then descends, you want to navigate that level bit in the middle by arching a little bit above the level line and swooping down into the descent with some speed already built up.
The Uldum one was harder for me. Here is how I cracked it:
- Surge Forward twice at the start, then Skyward Ascent after the first ring, even though you're not really going up at this point and have to angle slightly down to get through the second ring.
- Use Surge Forward on CD until you get to the steep vertical, and hit Skyward Ascent (while angling upward at the same time) when you pick up the green ball in the ring immediately before the top. I have seen some people do two Skyward Ascents here, with the first one coming two rings earlier than this, but I could never get this to work. The only thing that worked for me was only doing one Skyward Ascent for this climb.
- Resume using Surge Forward on CD. Soon you'll be weaving your way through the jungle. There is one part here that goes slightly up. You want to use Skyward Ascent for this climb, ideally having a Surge Forward immediately beforehand. This is probably the make-or-break point of the race. If you mis-time the Skyward Ascent, or if you aren't going as fast as you can at the moment you press it, you likely won't make the time control.
- Use Surge Forward on CD for the rest of the race, optionally including the last steep climb at the very end. (When I finally got gold, I only used Surge Forward for this last climb and lost some speed right before the final ring, but it was still enough to win by a comfortable margin. Just for fun, I ran the race again immediately after, followed this same strat except for using Skyward Ascent here, and that was good enough for gold as well.)
By doing this, I completed the Reverse course 3.5 seconds faster than necessary, whereas every other strategy I used was an average of 3.5 seconds too slow, despite them not feeling any slower in the moment.
This strat for Uldum Tour Reverse Gold came from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PpPgNCumt8. It's in Russian, but I put auto-translated English subtitles on and understood the strategy well enough to follow it and make it work. That video also has Un'goro Crater gold runs too.
