Learn to cast and to tie the improved clinch knot, and start with bait for easy fish near shore. Get the license first: it funds the fisheries.

Learn the water

Learn where fish hold (edges, drop-offs, structure) and when (dawn, dusk, overcast). Match your retrieve to the season: slow in cold water.

Dinner, honestly caught

Move to lure or fly, learn the local seasons, and practice catch and release properly (wet hands, quick release). Nothing you cook tastes like a fish you fooled.
