I've been rep grinding in Outland and got one of these. Just for fun, I decided to charge it up. When "cleaning the attic", I put the resulting staff on the AH at some modest amount, like 20G or less. It sold for 168G. I suspect that, post-cata, the staff may be interesting for transmog purposes.
So, don't toss it. It might get you some gold if you happen to have the shards to charge it.
