I just sold one of these for 10,000 gold. After the transaction was over the guy gave me a hug and whispered, "I can't believe I just did that!"

The funny thing is, I can. It took me six weeks of camping Geenia checking 5-10 times each day before I saw my first one. In fact, that was all I wanted. But I was in the habit of checking and so I stuck with it and to my surprise I got another one two weeks later. I gave one to my main and stuck the other in the bank.

I didn't even try to sell it. I figured that sooner or later someone would come along who understood the value of the item and then I could name my price. It took six months but that is exactly what happened. Some guy was spamming Trade looking for it and I knew that was my call.

People don't get that this is one of the rarest items in the game. It's the equivalent of something like Mimron's Head or Tyrel's Pet. If the estimate that she makes six a year is correct, and having farmed it for a long time I believe it, that means that at most as of today's date there are 36 of these on each server. That's not worth 10K; it's really worth more like 50K.

I honestly think at 10K he got a steal. But the most important thing to me wasn't the gold; it was the hug. I was glad I could give the item to some who actually understood it's value and not some drooler.

This dress has an extremely low spawn rate on the NPC. Some people speculate it could be as high as 2 months, making it one of the rarest "common" items around. Because of this, it can sell VERY well on the AH, especially on RP servers.

As of Patch 5.04 the spawn location for this item has changed. It no longer spawns at the end of the row of dresses but at the beginning of the row of dresses. In other words, it used to spawn at the bottom right of the vendor window and now it spawns at the top left. Make sure you look in the right place for it.

There are a few complicating factors.

(1) Extremely low spawn rate would exaggerate any flaws in data gathering.

(2) High item desireability increases the chance that even if you do camp the dress maker, someone else may also be doing so, will see and buy the dress before you do, and you will never register the spawning.

(3) There is a chance that the dress despawns if it is not bought within a cerain window of availability. Depending on how small the window is, the dress may spawn and be gone even without any other players getting in your way.

(4) Spawn rates are not necessarily constant. Nor do they have to be tied to a simple timer. It could be affected by character flow through Moonglade, season (Lunar Festival!), how quickly the previous one was bought, or be a totally random very small likelihood every day. It can be based on anything that can be measured, or maybe no measure at all.

Just thinking in terms of a game designer or computer programmer, there is all sorts of space to have fun making a highly desireable item be a real "find" when it does show up.

Add those factors together and there is really very little value to camping the dressmaker unless you can monitor her 24/7 for months, I'm guessing.

AFAIK, there are four robes that DO NOT bind on pickup/equip, have NO level requirement, and are item level 35+.

-Simple Black Dress crafted by Tailoring, roughly 2-5G in mats.
-Royal Dangui sold by vendors in UC, SWC, and Moonglade, ~29G.
-Green Wedding Hanbok limited supply sold by Geenia Sunshadow, somewhat rare, ~14G.
-Formal Dangui limited supply sold by Geenia Sunshadow, VERY rare, ~51G.
-Haliscan Jacket Added in patch 2.4.3, Tailor Pattern bought from Hauty Modiste in Tanaris.

This is useful to note because it allows you to apply one of the newer Burning Crusade enchants, such as Exceptional Stats, Exceptional Health, Resilience, Restore Mana Prime, etc., making them real powerful chestpieces.

They become so powerful that really, your best alternatives are to acquire the mats for +4 Stats and apply to superior chests in the 15-19 level range. But one important feature here would be lost... and that is the superiour chests would be soulbound, and therefore not reusable.

TLDR version: You get to make a resellable chest that's real good for leveling lowbies from 1-20+.

Lucky for me I'm a Druid, so every time I hearthed back home, I'd teleport to Moonglade first and check the vendor. After about 2 months of doing that I finally got one. I now have the best-dressed banker alt in Stormwind. :)

It seems that the Orphan Matron Aria, in dalaran, is wearing one of this fancy robes. So, if you want a good look at what you might be camping, by all means, stare at her.

As for the cool-down, last I heard it was 2 months... So unless blizzard changed it...

In passing I used the npc for a repair and spotted this dress for sale. I went onto Wowhead to check if it was any good, by the time I changed windows the room was full of players and the dress was gone. Bummer!

Zenithas+22via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Think it might be random. Didn't see it for two weeks, bought it, checked the vendor immediately again on impulse, another one was there. Bought -that- one, haven't seen it since. edit: Clarified that I checked the vendor straight after buying the first one.

I was lucky enough to pick this up today. The respawn rate on it is very low. However, if you have an alt that you can just park in front of the NPC and check it before you log on with your main and after you log out, you'll get it about as quickly as possible. The only time there are many people in Moonglade is during the lunar festival, so you are unlikely to have much competition for this.

It is very expensive for what it is, but it is also very unique. You aren't likely to see anyone else with one on.

Here's a tip for all trying to buy this dress ... do not mistake it for the Royal Dangui. The names are surprisingly similar, if you don't pay close attention. The Royal one is half the price of the Formal one.
Don't be like me and not realize there's two, and buy the wrong one, being all non-nonchalant about it. ... and then come here, not able to figure out why everyone's talking about how rare it is, and think Blizzard must've nerfed it.
...
Guess I'm camping the vendor, now. :D

gagfinder+16via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

yet another reason to keep ~80-100g on all characters at all times
you never know when you end up in moonglade and lose it to that level 42 random, because you had to log over to send those cursed 73g from your bank alt to your toon
PS never happened to me but I can visualise the mind shattering rage one would experience should the above happen

I got my first dress about a month ago after checking several times daily for 5-6 weeks. Recently, I decided to try to get another one to give as a gift. After checking only a few times, I found another dress 25 days after my first one. Then I checked the next day out of habit and got a THIRD dress.

I tested out the following enchants:

Works
Greater Defense: +22 def
Exceptional Mana: +250 mana

Does Not Work:
Powerful Stats: +10 stats
Super Stats: +8 stats
Exceptional Resilience: +20 res
Super Health: +275 hp
Mighty Health: +200 hp
Greater Mana Restoration: +10 mp5

I just wanted to stop by to make a note - some folks may be thinking with all the recent changes to WoW, that this item may no longer spawn (I was a bit doubtful myself).

As of 14th December 2017, I can confirm it still does, having had the incredible luck and joy of picking one of these up from the vendor this evening.

I had an alt parked for perhaps 4-5 weeks, checking a few times a day.

Best of luck to those who still may be searching for one!

Item enchants (some? all? I'm not sure) were changed with the WotLK expansion to require an item type, e.g. cloth, leather, in addition to an item level. The Formal Dangui has the correct item level, but has no item type, which means it cannot be enchanted. At least not by all enchants, certainly not by the WotLK enchants. I don't think it can be enchanted at all since WotLK came out.

21986+8via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

That only applies to things like rings and the rep rewards (glyphs for head, shoulder enchants, etc). Soulbind on enchant does not apply to normal enchants that are available to everybody (ones that can be done through the trade window).

I just bought this tonight after about 4 months of checking daily across a number of characters/servers. I just wanted to add that phasing like Chromie Time and War Mode do impact what's available on the vendor. In my case, I had two toons on the same low pop server with WM on and off and found it up with WM on. I was so surprised because I've gotten used to seeing the red and green hanboks up instead and it took me a second to actually process that this was finally it lol.

323663+7via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

I think you've confused the Formal Dangui (rare) with the Royal Dangui (common). Geenia Sunshadow always has White Traditional Hanbok, Dark Green Wedding Hanbok and Royal Dangui in stock. Red Traditional Hanbok, Green Wedding Hanbok and Formal Dangui are her limited offerings.

Eddan98+5via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Idk if I got lucky or not, found this up the 2nd day of trying, probably did. But I put in quite a bit of effort.

I had planted an alt on each (shared) RP realm on each shard. So WM on, WM off, with and without Chromie time. So 4 tries per character. Traveling back and forth was the time-consuming part. The Inn nearby allows you to turn off WM though, which saves some time (Even though it is not marked as an inn as it lacks an innkeeper)

Checked in on each alt after a couple of hours, no big deal. Found on Argent Dawn WM ON, no Chromie

ziddy1232+3via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Quoted from WoWWiki.

Although it has been said that this is the only item in the game that can be enchanted with Wrath of the Lich King enchants it cannot be. The WotLK enchants require an armor type ie. cloth, mail, etc. this item has no such armor type. Burning Crusade enchants do work on this item as its item level is 60 and BC enchants have no such restriction.
Biaxident+2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Point is that the aforementioned chest items can be used by any of your low-level toons by simply mailing it between them. The other 'superior chests' would be soulbound on equip or even on pickup, therefore they can only be used by 1 character.

352798+2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Have anyone tested other enchants than 10 stats, 275 hp (does not work) or 250 mana (which works)?.

There are also enchants like:
200 hp, 8 stats, 20 def rating, 20 resil, 10 mp5. Some of these would really rock and be a huge upgrade for a lvl 1 twink.

702755+2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

+15 Resilience does work, as there is one up for sale currently on Silver Hand - US (RP) with that enchant already on it. Apparently the last one sold on the Auction House for about 10k. I'm glad I have a tailor on this server. :) Pre-submission ninja edit: My tailor comment has to do with there being a demand for cosmetic items on my realm, not having to do with tailors making one of these. There is no crafting recipe for any profession that creates this item, or even a lookalike, which is why it is so rare (and therefore valuable).
