The whole quest should properly be treated like an instance with roles set out, especially if people are not at 85 yet. He is heavy melee and easily set off, aggro-wise. All the other bosses were a faceroll compared to him.
I got in there with a little pickup group of an undergeared DPS paladin, a DPS shaman, a mage, a hunter and a warlock (me).During a pause after a wipe, I read this page on Wowhead, to see what caused the quest to fail, why we had a parking lot full of stagecoaches and why Himself refused to show up. I don't normally lead groups, but wound up taking over because it was a nice group, they were stumped, and I usually have a window open to this site under my WoW session.
I checked people's levels, recounts and so on. The pally was lowest DPS, so I asked her to just hold aggro. I asked the shaman to heal. She wasn't geared for heals, but she had the spells. I suggested that we pet tank, so I switched to Demo (Felguard and demon form) and the hunter brought out his bear. BTW - it's a great opportunity to use your warlock transporter or mage blink.
Things that made the quest fail were if one person died or if one person left the arena, even going to the gate to see where he was. You need your feet on the ground at his level. We tried casting from a canopy in there and he evaded every cast. Dropping entirely and picking it up again gets him to show up. Despite the quest being level 84, people lower than that can get in the group and pick it up. You could get people who are below level. I had an 82 and an 83. This can cause problems, but not insoluble ones.
Now a cultural note: If you find yourself with lower level people. Be nice about it. Players have to gear up somehow and this is an outstanding way to gear up, especially for non-puggers. If you are at max, it can be two nice achievements. So, everyone gets something out of it. Stick with it, because it'd be a real PITA to find people to pick it up partway through. Don't spam recount, do be a problem solver, don't be a quitter, and do be a team player.

Description
You're going to have your hands full with this one, pal. We've got a seasoned gentleman warrior here! He hails from Gilneas, and he's out to prove that he's the best warrior this side of Azeroth. You better pull up those boots and zip up those pants, because it's going to get downright feral up in here. Give me the word when you're down for some punishment.

- The Crucible of Carnage: Calder's Creation!
Grim and gory, this next match is sure to have the crowd groanin' one way or another. Calder Gray has been gathering the bodyparts of defeated challengers and building the perfect champion. This thing is the ultimate cobbled collaboration of corpsified combatants.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- The Crucible of Carnage: The Twilight Terror!
We've got someone you'll really love to hate this time around. I wasn't sure at first if I should let him into the pit, but a fight's a fight! And who am I to turn down some guaranteed cash?! This guy hails from the Twilight Citadel itself, and comes toting a toasty punch.
