Quite an unrewarding quest. There is no animation or effect, the portals don't disappear (not even for a few seconds), and furthermore, invaders still come out of a portal right after it is closed. That really kills the sense of accomplishment.
As soon as you accept this quest, move to a quiet spot where you can positively identify your own whisp, and put a raid marking on it. Then, when you're near a "portal" (as someone mentioned, two vertical jets of fire) you can see if your whisp is actually doing anything useful that you need to stick around for - the whisp will start circling the portal.

Description
The fire elementals are pouring out of portals on the far side of the Ashen Fields. We need someone to close them. Cut off some of their reinforcements. Banishing these kinds of elemental magics is something our wisps are perfectly suited for. One will come with you. Lead it to a portal and keep it alive until it finishes.
