This is druids' quick, expensive heal.

In Cataclysm (as of 4.0.3a), all healers have the following types of heals:

Quick, expensive heal: 1.5 second cast, very high mana cost, high heal value.
Inexpensive heal: 3 second cast (usually talented to 2.5), very low mana cost, low heal value.
Slow, big heal: 3 second cast (usually talented to 2.5), high mana cost, very high heal value.

The mana costs differ very slightly between classes. Two of them have the quick heal cost more than the big heal.

I'm going to be doing a more complete breakdown of the healing per mana and healing per second of Druid single-target large heals. For this consideration, I'm mostly looking at burst Hps (heals per second), so I'll be ignoring the HoT portion for calculations.

Regrowth Rank 12
29% of base mana 40 yd range
2 sec cast
Heals a friendly target for 2234 to 2494 and another 2345 over 21 sec.

Average Base Heal = (2234 + 2494)/2 = 2363
Base mana at lvl 80 for a druid: 3496
29% of that is 1014 mana, before reductions from talents.

Coefficient Approx 53.90% (64.68% with Empowered Rejuvenation)

Talents which effect HT:
Moonglow 9% cost reduction
Master Shapeshifter 4% increase healing (while in ToL form)
Gift of Nature 10% increase to all healing
Empowered Rejuvenation 20% increase to healing coefficient for Direct Heal and HoT portions.
Tree of Life 6% increased healing to everyone you can reach with your heals (45 yard range). Also, 20% further mana reduction
Improved Regrowth and Natural Perfection for 53% total crit chance increase and Nature's Splendor for a potential 0.5 cast time reduction.
Also, can be used with Nature's Swiftness for an instant cast.

Can't forget the Glyph of Regrowth +20% healing done for the Direct Heal and HoT portions if a Regrowth HoT is still on the target.

The case that I'll be looking at is maximum burst Hps. Specifically, I was contemplating a build that improves healing touch to be used as a backup after getting a Nature's Splendor proc from a Regrowth crit. Haste effects both spells evenly, so I'll be disregarding haste. Crits will play a big role because we're counting on Nature's Splendor for big bursts. I'll be doing several tables based on the druid's critical chance.

Talented Mana Cost:
Base: Moonglow: ToL: Both (multiplicative/additive)
1014 923 811 738 / 719

I'm pretty sure 738 is the value off my Druid on live with Moonglow 3/3 and in ToL form, so I'll be using that value.

2200 4591 5968 6083 6198 6.22 2296

Note, all values are the average amount healed. Average amount calculated from:
(Base heal * non-crit chance) + (Base heal * crit chance * 1.5)
where 1.5 is the crit multiplier.

Now for a subsequent cast where the Glyph of Regrowth kicks in. Also, the cast time will be somewhat less because we just finished a Regrowth cast which may or may not crit. The heals per second (HPS) columns reflects a 60% crit chance on the previous cast (for an average cast time of 1.7s). The heals per mana column reflects the 60% crit chance for the current cast.

Average cast time derived from:
(base cast * non-crit chance) + ((base cast - 0.5) * crit chance)

non-crit 60% 65% 70%
+Heal -Heal -crit -crit -crit HPM HPS
1500 4850 6305 6427 6548 8.54 3709

2200 5509 7162 7300 7437 9.70 4213

That's a lot of spreadsheeting. For the time being, I'll leave my conclusion at this: 1800+ spell power unbuffed and you're looking at 4000 HPS (before accounting for your haste rating or Wrath of Air 5% spell haste!) from spamming regrowth at nearly 10 HPM. Buff food, a shaman totem and maybe an elixer, and regrowth spam is just plain retarded.

Eventually, I will make the comparison between plain regrowth spam and Regrowth - (Natures Splendor proc) 2.0 Sec HT cast - regrowth decisions. I have a hunch that the reduced crit chance on HT will kill the HPS consideration.

Edit: Good grief, I did all that work and now they're changing a key talent. (3.1 patch notes, taken from mmo-champ) I'll revise this shortly, when 3.1 has a known date.

An altogether decent spell to cast by itself, talented and glyphed this spell is a power house.

Glyph of Regrowth + 20% initial heal
Improved Regrowth (Talent) + 50% critical chance, triggering Nature's Grace and Living Seed
Nature's Splendor + 6 sec. hot duration (27 sec total)
Mana reduction talents from Tree of Life and balance (Moonglow).
And of course, it can be made instant with Nature's swiftness and be consumed for Swiftmend.

I haven't looked to closely at the wrath idols, but I'd expect there to be one to improve Regrowth somehow.

Regrowth gains ~100% of your Bonus Healing, and is broken down into two parts:

  • The direct part of your heal gains ~30% of your Bonus Healing

  • The HoT part of Regrowth gains ~70% of your Bonus Healing

And since I believe the coefficient of DoTs are broken down evenly over time, each tick of Regrowth gains 10% of your Bonus Healing (since the HoT ticks every 3 secs for 21 secs, which is equal to 7 ticks)

I'm pretty sure that regrowth is now by far the worst healing spell in the game. All the other healing class quick spells have base healing around 7k. Regrowth barely reaches 4k and it costs 35% base mana, while the others cost about 27%. You have to take 3 point talent to make it even the slightly bit good (Nature's Bounty: +60% regrowth crit chance). Please correct me if I'm wrong. I would love to be wrong about this.

It looks like Blizzard has finally recognised that all healing classes do need a Flash Heal style heal with a rapid casting time. With the latest few changes the efficiency still looks bad if you're over-writing the HoT, but with Imp Regrowth and the average bonus heal from its frequent crits it starts to compare quite well with Flash and Lesser Healing Wave.

All of which makes druid healing just that bit easier for Resto druids.

Regrowth no longer receives a +50% crit chance via talents. That particular talent was renamed and now only grants 25% crit chance bonus. In addition, The new talent (Nature's Bounty) also increases the critical effect chance of Nourish by 25%. If you add in the new Nourish Glyph (Glyph of Nourish), Nourish becomes a far more superior spell to regrowth spam, given the nerfs to Regrowth crit and the buffs to Nourish Crit+Healing.

No, the Healing over Time component is the same, crit or not. Whether it does or not, however, it is still an efficient spell to use (Provided many of the ticks are actually used and don't become overhealing). Being able to pick up Improved Regrowth, however, insures you're able to downrank more effectively and conserve more mana, even if the healing over time isn't used to its fullest extent.

You're completely failing to realize the reason why a quick heal exists -- to heal someone that would die otherwise, buying time for a better heal. There are a few reasons why regrowth fails at this: The heavy reliance on RNG pretty much makes the skill terrible for this. This skill is completely capable, even with talents and mastery galore, of healing for all of 6k damage for over 6k mana. If your target could live in the cataclysm dungeon/raid environment with 6k hp, the chances are very high he could have lived with the HP he had before the heal, and you could have cast a better heal.

The spell power coefficent of the direct heal, and heal of time is as follows:
DH-approx 54%(64.8% with Empowered Rejuvenation)
HOT-131.6% (157.9% with Empowered Rejuvenation)

Aisenfaire+4via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Nourish and Healing Touch cannot match a properly specced and glyphed Regrowth for a PVE tree in terms of HPM, HPS, initial heal, and added HOT.

Regrowth has:
- a 50% chance to crit (Improved Regrowth), which will proc Nature's Grace and Living Seed
- heals for 20% more if Regrowth HOT is still present on the target (Glyph of Regrowth)
- HOT benefits from Empowered Rejuvenation, Genesis, and Nature's Splendor

which unfortunately cannot be matched by Nourish.

There is still an optional place for Nourish as a small heal to avoid overhealing and waste of mana, but it definitely cannot replace Regrowth as the big heal.

(I do not mention HT much, as glyphing and speccing for this is primarily for PVP, which is a different concern altogether.)

I'm sorry to disagree, but while that is the purpose of a quick heal that example is terrible. For that particular raid situation you have much better tools: if you don't have swiftmend off cooldown or nature swiftness ready for a healing touch, you may need to check your timing. Also, if you need a HoT effect on target for your emergency swiftmend this spell is the best choice, the cast time is the same as the global cooldown, they'll land at the same time. And that is a terrible example by the way it's stated even - if it fails to save it's because it heals too little, but if it saves you c

I am sorry. I do NOT think you are wrong. Nourish used to be our Flash heal, Flash of light and Healing surge...and it was great, could not complain...but now...Why on earth could they not make THIS...make Regrowth the mana saving one, and kept Nourish like it used to be.

As it stands (calculating averages with criticals), a restoration druid should find this to be their number one skill now for their first cast, it used to be quite mana inefficient compared to other skills and mostly for emergencies // focus healing, but with the new buff this skill is going to be pretty amazing, especially when I already am forced to spam this skill for certain fights (Such as Naj'entus, where it is extremely important). Expect to use this spell as frequently as lifebloom come 2.4.

3996-3via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Regrowth is a powerful healing spell, however is relatively mana inefficient. Use this when you want to "forget" about a player for a bit or when you need to keep a constant stream of healing on a person.

One situation where Regrowth shines is in the Vael fight in BWL. Just spam this - it's great due to its shorter cast time and its constant healing.
