"Deathborne is a long cooldown ability that transforms you into a undead skeletal mage".
I wished that this ability would make the mage temporarily into an undead, just like Death knights Lichborne, with all it's benefits.

Does anybody know wether it tripples the chance of giving a frost mage brain freeze or fingers of frost, or not? And more importantly: can a fire mage trigger hot streak with a single cast of fireball while having this buff if two of the fireballs crit?
Finally! Every time I saw a mob cast a frostbolt volley, shadowbolt volley etc. I got so jealous. There's no denying this is a cool skill, transforming you into a Maldraxxi mage for 25 seconds, with 15% extra spell damage and (supposed) volley capabilities on one of your primary spells.
You'd be surprised to know Necrolord mage is very unpopular. According to wowranks.io, Necrolords make up only 2.5% of fire mages, less than 10% of frost mages and barely more than 12% of arcane.
So why? Burst skills in this game are normally king - and stacking another 15% spell damage on mage would be insane, surely. Well here's my observations from trying it out.
1) Competing with Night Fae, which gives access to the Niya soulbind and Shifting Power, both very strong dps wise.
2) Pitiful radius on the spell cleave, roughly 5 yards. most of the time won't hit any extra targets unless it's melee m+ trash, rendering the skill's main upside obsolete.
3) For arena - casting the Deathborne transform telegraphs your intentions to opponent. Mage's main strength is sneaking in a poly then bursting someone on very short notice. People smarter and higher rated than me decided Night Fae was the pick - I'm inclined to agree. For unrated and world PvP it could be fun, and since it's not a popular pick, it could surprise your enemies.
4) Doesn't line up well with any mage cooldowns, none are precisely 3 minutes due to conduits or talents. So actually won't stack with those cooldowns often in pve fights.
Tooltip
Transform into a powerful skeletal mage for 25 sec.
While in the form of a skeletal mage, your Frostbolt, Fireball, and Arcane Blast hit up to 2 enemies near your target and your spell damage is increased by 15%.
