To extend on what Parallax said, when it "backfires" nothing happens, unlike most other backfires from engineering.
Jumper Cables are best utilized by rogues and hunters as they can Feign Death and save a group if there are respawns and the rezzers are dead.
High chance to backfire but amazing if they do work.
