Voidlight Marl Farming Guide: How to Earn It and What It Buys

Voidlight Marl is Midnight's expansion-wide currency: 847 sources, 463 things to buy, and a weekly trade at Orin that sets its value at two and a half gold per Marl. Here is how to earn it and where to spend it first.

Voidlight Marl is the quiet backbone of the Midnight economy. It drops from over 800 sources across all four zones, it buys over 460 things, it transfers across your whole Warband, and almost nobody farms it on purpose because nobody has done the math on what a single Marl is worth.

The math is now done for you, twice. First by Blizzard's own vendor, and once by every gold-maker who has stood in front of Orin Straylight since the week of October 6.

What one Marl is worth

Orin Straylight sits by the Catalyst in Silvermoon City, and since the week of October 6 he sells one extra Nebulous Voidcore per week. His price list is the interesting part, because he takes payment in three forms:

PaymentAmount
Gold5,000
Voidlight Marl2,000
Veteran Mistcrests100
A Voidcore is one bonus roll on Season 2 loot. If you would ever consider paying gold for one, Orin has set the exchange rate: one Voidlight Marl is worth two and a half gold, and 2,000 of them are worth 5,000 gold. That is the floor under every Marl in your currency tab, established by the game itself.

The full Voidcore system is covered in the Ascendant Venomstones guide, including where Ascendant Venomstone drops and what it upgrades.

How Marls actually arrive

Nobody farms Marl as a single activity. It accumulates along every other thing you do, and the job is knowing which activities carry it:

  • World quests pay around 30 Marl each, and first-time completions on alts pay more, in the 45 and up range. This is the passive engine.
  • Prey Hunts drop Marl directly from the Adventurer Chest at the end of every hunt, alongside gear and crests. One hunt per difficulty per zone per week, four zones.
  • Delves pay Undercoins, and the delve vendors sell a Marl purchase priced in Undercoins. For players who run Delves anyway, this is the closest thing to a direct conversion, and the reason delve farmers never seem to run out of Marls.
  • Renown tracks hand out bounty caches at milestones, worth 1,000 and 2,000 Marl at various ranks on the Season 2 tracks.
  • One-time treasures and quest chains across all four zones pay 150 to 250 Marl each. These are the deposits you spend once and never see again.
  • The Warband transfer is the multiplier. Marls move between your characters, so a stable of alts doing first-time world quests is a legitimate Marl farm.

What to buy, in order of value

The vendor lists are long, but the value ranking is short:

  1. Profession knowledge tomes, 750 Marl each. Ten points of profession knowledge, the scarcest progression resource in the expansion. If a character of yours crafts anything seriously, this is the best purchase on any Marl vendor, and it is the reason alt-currency farming has a payoff.
  2. The weekly Orin trade, 2,000 Marl. Only if you are raiding or pushing keys and would actually use a bonus roll. If not, the Marls are worth more as vendor items below.
  3. Housing decor, 150 to 500 per piece. The cheapest cosmetics in the game right now relative to effort. The housing catalog shows the sets; Marl vendors across every zone carry pieces at the low end of that band.
  4. The collectibles. A companion pet at 2,500, a toy at 4,000, armor ensembles at 5,000, and a ground mount at 6,000 on the Season 2 renown track. These are goals, not purchases: 6,000 Marl is twelve weekly Orin trades' worth of currency.
The wrong purchase is anything that duplicates gear you can get from content. The vendor gear is catch-up gear; the knowledge, decor and collectibles are the durable value.

The realistic weekly rhythm

For a character doing the content anyway: clear the world quests you like, run the weekly Prey Hunts, take the delve Undercoins, and sweep a few one-time treasures while out in the zones. That routine banks on the order of 1,500 to 2,500 Marl a week without a single dedicated Marl farm, and it lands you exactly one Orin trade or one knowledge tome every week. Two characters on a Warband roughly double it, because the alt's first-time world quest bonuses are the highest Marl-per-minute activity that exists.

Why this matters for gold-makers

The gold angle is indirect but real. Marls buy knowledge tomes, knowledge makes crafters better, and better crafters win crafting orders, which the gold farm ranking lists as one of the two best low-effort income streams of Season 2. A currency you were going to accumulate anyway converts into profession power, which converts into gold, with no auction house risk anywhere in the chain.

And if you truly need nothing: Orin's 2,000 Marl trade is a 5,000 gold item every week, forever, for currency you earned playing the game.

FAQ

What is Voidlight Marl used for?

Renown quartermasters across Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, Voidstorm and the Season 2 zones, housing decor vendors, profession knowledge tomes, collectibles, and Orin Straylight's weekly Nebulous Voidcore trade in Silvermoon City.

How much is Voidlight Marl worth in gold?

Two and a half gold each, set by Orin's exchange rate of 2,000 Marl for a Voidcore that also sells for 5,000 gold. It is a floor implied by a vendor, not a market price, since Marls cannot be traded to other players.

What is the fastest way to farm Voidlight Marl?

First-time world quests on alts pay the most per minute, roughly 45 and up per quest, and Marls transfer across the Warband. On a single character, weekly Prey Hunts and Delves are the steady sources.

Can Voidlight Marl be traded or sold?

No. It binds to your Warband, moving freely between your own characters but never to other players. The only conversion to gold value is the purchases it replaces, led by Orin's weekly trade.

Is the Orin trade worth it over just paying gold?

Only when you have Marls you will not spend on knowledge tomes or collectibles. Paying 2,000 surplus Marls instead of 5,000 gold is free money; spending Marls you needed for a 750 Marl tome to save gold you could farm in an hour is the reverse.
