Open guide →Measure gold earned after costs
A gold-making method should explain where its revenue comes from and what can prevent the sale. Gathering converts your time into materials. Crafting also commits reagents. Reselling commits gold before you know whether another buyer will pay more.
Track these activities separately. A profitable evening of gathering does not prove that buying the same materials is a profitable flip. Likewise, a listed crafted item has not earned its asking price yet.
- Record gold spent on purchases, reagents and listing costs.
- Record gold actually received from sales, along with any returned deposits.
- Subtract expenses from receipts. Keep unsold stock on a separate line.
- Divide the result by total time, including travel, crafting and relisting.
Use a small batch to find the bottleneck
Illustrative example: a batch costs 900 gold to make and eventually returns 1,200 gold after selling fees. Its profit is 300 gold. If producing and selling that batch takes 45 minutes of your time, the measured return is 400 gold per hour. This is arithmetic, not a forecast for any item.
If most of the batch remains unsold, your constraint is demand. Producing more adds inventory without solving that problem. If everything sells but crafting consumes your entire session, compare the margin with simply selling the reagents.
Repeat the experiment on a different day before increasing the batch. Record price changes and unsuccessful listings too; leaving them out makes a method appear more reliable than it is.
- Material prices: compare the value of selling reagents directly
- Auction House browser: inspect current competing listings
