This is absolutely the WORST quest design I've seen in the game. Between the huge aggro radius of the mobs, their quick respawn rate, and the fact that the Abominations are constantly patrolling, you'll fight multiple mobs at once more often than not. Given that the Abominations have a "hook" they pull you in with, and the Shades will constantly port to your location with a damaging attack (then go to someone else, including your pet, and do damage, in a continuous loop) you're forced to melee even if you're a ranged class. If this all happens within aggro-range of one of the Necrolords (who, again, aggro from quite a distance) then they're also nuking you with their ranged attacks. If you switch focus to at least try to kill the Necrolord, then you (or your pet) are going to aggro even more mobs surrounding him-- dead.
As a mail-wearing hunter, I died more on this one quest than I have in the rest of the game put together.
I tried kiting the mobs to the friendly NPC's, as suggested, but half the time I was dead before I got there.
Oh, and yay! When you die in the MASOLEUM, you go to a Spirit Healer up on the surface and have to run back! It's not a long run, but by the time you get back, rez and heal, most of your mobs have already respawned, and you have to start clearing the same room all over again.
All of this for quest rewards that weren't anything special compared to what I already had. This should be a group quest, with Blue rewards, not a single-person quest with Greens. Maybe a five-man could do this without constantly dying-- although I'm not sure, due to the Shades. Maybe a Tank could solo it without constantly dieing.
The only reason I even finished this quest was that it's so poorly designed that it made me angry, and when I get angry I get stubborn.

Description
Just down the steps lies the gateway to damnation: Scourge as far as the eye can see and getting thicker with each passing moment. What little intelligence we've been able to gather indicates that two Scourge necrolords are furiously working at emptying the first two crypts down below. Before we can breach the inner chamber to Thel'zan, we'll need to take care of those two clowns and their Naxxramas cronies. Go down into the mausoleum and take out the necrolords and the Naxxramas dreadguards and shades.
