TheWoWDBAs of today in patch 8.0, this quest no longer works if you jump on them. Don't be like me that wasted 5min trying to jump on them for several times, doing it DOES NOT work.
The only way to complete the quest is if you dps them down, that way works.

To complete the quest, you either need to interact with the [npc=57237] (which will cause you to JUMP on them, squashing them) or you can, in fact, DPS them down and get credit. It may take several jumps to squash the bookworm completely.
I personally found it to be much more simple and quick to click the worms.

Description
The worst possible thing has happened, {race}. We. Have. Bookworms. This is a critical situation. All bookworms in the library must be eradicated at once to prevent their spread. We must squash this problem, literally! Please examine the infested books in the library and squash any bookworms that you find.
