TheWoWDBI think there may be a bug related to pets and/or guardians. I tried for 10+ minutes as a demo lock and was only able to succesfully collect 1 or 2 hides out of a ton of attempts. I remembered there being an issue in some SL quests where having a pet or guardian up would interfere with the quest, so changed to Destro and kept my pet unsummoned and it worked every time. Was able to knock it out in a couple minutes. One issue with Demo is the Inner Demons talent, it automatically spawns imps so you will almost always have 1 or 2 up.
Not sure if this was the actual issue, but knowing it was a problem with some SL quests I suspect it is.

If your apprentice is not near you when you kill the salamanther, the extra action button won't do anything.
So make sure the apprentice is near you when you kill it, they are pretty slow and lag behind you, especially right after you dismount from dragonriding.
On top of the NPC has to be near the Salamanther, YOU have to land a killing mob.
So Pets and/or Guardian is bad for this WQ.
Demonology Warlock has is worst because of imps, but you can use Implosion because it's considered YOUR damage, rather than the imp's
or well, just change spec to destro or affliction.
