TheWoWDBWhatever method you use, it's a boring and tedious quest. I've enjoyed all the Northrend quests so far, but I can't say I particularly liked this one. It's made worse by the 'poo ninjas', who will happily run in and steal your guano whilst you are engaging a bat. - I mean, come on, being a ninja is pretty low, but to ninja bat poo takes a special kind of low life.
It also needs to be said that someone at Blizzard clearly has as a bit of an issue. Another task that involves a player running around picking up poo? And apparently there's another 'poo picking' quest in the Borean Tundra. All this on top of the other Outlands and Azeroth 'Poo-picking' quests we had to do whilst levelling up?
Are they trying to tell us something? Maybe there's some sort of subtle hint here somewhere? Else one of their devs has a seriously dodgy fetish.

It wasn't working for me initially, until I learned to target the firecrackers on the bats' shadows. Even though they don't appear to be directly under the bats as the quest text suggests, this seemed to work the most reliably.

You, yes you... I need your help! Petrov sent me up here to get bat guano for the cluster bombs he's making back at the keep. He sent me to my doom! The darkclaw bats hang out in the Rivenwood to the north, but I'm not taking a step off of this platform unless it's to go home! But you... you could get it for me! Yes? Pretty please?!!! Here, take these firecrackers. My thinking is that if you drop 'em underneath the bats, the guano will be scared right out of them!
