Because in-game there's no tutorial, here's how it seems to work:

  1. You start in a mode where you are picking up speed going through each ring

  2. By pressing Flail Arms (button 1) you switch to a mode where you start flapping your arms, this slows you down and prevents you from gaining speed when going through rings

  3. By pressing Flail Arms again you switch back to the speedy mode.

This design is really unclear because both spells are called "Flail Arms", only the icon is different. Don't spam the button, just switch to arm flapping mode if you feel like going too fast. You will physically see your character flip their arms if you're in that mode.

The icons used:

  • When in speedy mode you'll see the [icondb=5003205] Aerial Halt icon on your bar

  • When in flappy mode you'll see [icondb=4640496] Thrill Chaser icon on your bar
