Longest... placeholder... ever...

Edit: HUZZAH! It's now a stag, as it was meant to be!

For all you "noobies," the default form of this spell for almost a decade was the crappy cheetah model that's now a minor glyph option. It's hard to believe I wrote this comment 5 years ago!

As of patch 7.1, the ground based travel form increases your speed by 100% when activated out of combat, and 40% when in combat or when in an arena or battleground. Previously it always increased speed by just 40%.

Which speed you get depends on your combat status when you shapeshift. So you keep the faster speed even if you enter combat, and will need to re-shift to upgrade your speed if you initially shifted while in combat.

The 100% speed increase is not affected by standard +speed items and effects, including Perfect Dreamgrove Blossom and Feline Swiftness. It's also not affected by guild perks and achievement rewards that increase mount speed.
Update: As of patch 7.2 travel form speed is affected by the +20% speed rewarded by Broken Isles Pathfinder Part One. It is still currently not affected by the guild perk Mount Up.

It is still affected by Sunblossom Pollen (sometimes grown in the fertile soil Druid class hall upgrade.) It's probably a bug, but using the pollen also allows other +speed effects to apply. I'm currently running around at 267% of normal run speed thanks to various +speed gear, significantly faster than a mounted player.
Update: Patch 7.1.5 changed the function of Sunblossom Pollen. It now reduces damage taken instead of increasing speed. It now has no effect on travel form.

Sometimes when I want to change to Travel Form quickly after walking from an inside place to an outside place, it took a few seconds to realize I was outside and it would finally cast. A trick I've found out is if you jump from an inside environment to an outside, the game realizes quicker that you've moved to an outside area. Probably when your feet land it refreshes it quicker. You can cast Travel Form instantly with this method. It's especially useful for BG's and you need a quick getaway if you have the WSG flag.

Shapeshift into a travel form appropriate to your current location, increasing movement speed on land, in water, or in the air, and granting protection from Polymorph effects.

The act of shapeshifting frees you from movement impairing effects.

Land speed increased when used out of combat. This effect is disabled in battlegrounds and arenas.

Druids in Cat Form, Bear Form, Travel Form or [spell=1066], are treated as Beasts, and thus are susceptible to Hunters' [spell=1513]. Also, they will not show up on Track Humanoids but will show up on Track Beasts.
Druids in [spell=33891] are treated as Elementals and thus are susceptible to [spell=710] and [spell=76780].

EDIT: For patch accuracy. Thanks for the responses.

Druids in Cat, Bear, Dire Bear, Travel or Aquatic form, due to not being humanoid anymore, cannot be sapped.

+40% movement speed is a massive boost at level 30, compared to a max of +30% with cat form and both talent points in Feral Swiftness at level 22+. This is the fastest you can go until level 40 and you get your mount.

You might think that buying your riding mount is not worth the gold for the 20% speed increase (from travel form), but keep in mind that you have to buy the training anyway if you want to get your level 60 and other future mounts.

Rastafa+36via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

My mistake, you're right. Another thing about travel form, it can be faster than a mount if you only have to go a short distance because it's an instant cast as opposed to the 3 second cast for getting on your mount.

1146241+28via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Despite all the people slamming this ability for being useless and slower than a mount, please keep in mind that you can cast it in combat and it counts as a shapeshift rather than a mount. This makes it incredibly fun and useful with the right items, skills and a little creativity.

Why? Well...

Some instances and zones are considered to be "outdoors" but have restrictions that don't allow players to mount (certain parts of Throne of Thunder, Temple of the Jade Serpent, Vortex Pinnacle, just to name a few). Since travel form is technically NOT a mount, you can say, "Screw that!" and cast it anyway. If you also throw in [spell=56950], other players in your party can still mount you for some reason, even though regular mounts aren't allowed. Combine it with movement buffs, e.g., Enchant Boots - Pandaren's Step, the passive talent [spell=131768] and glyphed [spell=106898] (or even Darkflight if you're a worgen druid), and you can be faster than any ground-mounted player—while being in a place where everyone else has to walk. So, for instance, you could ferry one of your slow, slow, non-druid party members across the windy bridge portion of ToT.

Make sure to cast Stampeding Roar and laugh at those winds like they're nothing.

Being able to use travel form in combat is also invaluable. While some people would prefer [spell=102280] to make a quick getaway from stuff like Horridon's [spell=136741] or a Pandaren's [spell=125799], travel form works just as well and it has no cooldown, so you can keep spamming it any time you need to get somewhere FAST. Need to get Jin'rokh's [spell=137399] away from the raid quickly and your 20 yard jump just isn't cutting it? There's a travel form for that!

And finally, you can use travel form on the [item=85500] while another player is riding you (via glyph of the stag). With darkflight/stampeding roar and jumps, you and your friend can easily hit over 600% movement speed on water. Forget ground mounts; that's faster that a FLYING player. It's fast enough to let you catch up and overtake a swarm of [npc=73279] hunters all the way from the other side of the Timeless Isles. All they'll see is the two of you zooming past them at the speed of light, a random player sitting on a deer as it spasmodically jumps up and down on a raft.

That alone is priceless.

Travel form, you rock. Never change.

For anyone who's macro for travel form broke after 8.0.1 pre-patch, the spell is now called "Travel Form(Shapeshift)"

/cast Travel Form(Shapeshift)

You can also shift-click from the spell book directly into a macro, ensuring you have the correct spelling.

Siedygan+23via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

You can also attack in Travel Form. Your damage is the same as if you were hitting with your weapon. Your weapon skill will not affect your damage. Even if you are skill 50/150 in 2Handed Maces, you will cause the damage you would make with skill 150 in 2Handed Maces. You will not improve your weapon skill when hitting in Travel Form.

Why change how Travel Form works?

If you are in an area where you can fly you change into Flight Form. Just because you can fly doesn't mean that I want to.
Shapeshifting is the iconic ability of druids. Why take the choices away from us.

I miss my Cheetah travel form, although hopefully it will be back in no flying zones.

An example of f it's not broken then don't fix it!

I think each race should get their own travel form.

Night Elf- Stag (Their goddess Elune married a stag and gave birth to Cenarius who is half stag half night elf)

Worgen- Wolf (They are humanoid wolves and revere the wolf ancient, Goldrinn)

Tauren- Tallstrider (They are found in Mulgore and Tauren hunters even start with one you usually can't get until 70)

Troll- Raptor (They like raptors and use them as their mounts)

Gnome- Rabbit (Because they...what do you mean they can't be druids?)

The new stag Travel Form model comes complete with several animated emotes. Will update if I happen to find any more animated emotes.

v5.0.4
/sit - (rest on the ground)
/dance - (a sort of tap dance?)
/sleep + /lie - (curl up and lie down)
/eat + /feast + /drink - (grazing animation)
/cower - (stunned animation)
/mountspecial - (rear up)
/kneel - (somewhat like how a giraffe drinks water..?)

Note: All these emotes can be performed with another player mounted on the glyphed Travel Form.

So Zandalari are now getting Raptors because they follow Gonk the raptor loa and master of shapes. But for some inane reason, troll druids still don't get an option for a raptor travel form. Not even as a glyph. Blizzard, please.

A better method I have found is to tap your strafe left/right key a split second before u hit travel form, this "change in direction", forces the server to update your current position and recognises you as being outside, therefore enabling you to shift instantly

Zlave+12via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Your math is a little off, it would be 180% with Feral Swiftness and Dash, but unfortunately Feral Swiftness doesn't stack with Dash, so even with 2/2 Feral Swiftness (taking Cat Druids to 130%), the 50% speed from Dash is only 20%. Still, 150% is still pretty nifty at such a low level.

148035+12via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

While one cannot cast spells in Travel Form, you can melee, herb, and skin. Often, as I was traveling through a zone, I'd level my herbalism by running between nodes on the way to my destination in Travel Form. Obviously, this would be a gigantic waste of time while mounted.

cxarli+11via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Absolutely horrible change! As of the pre-WoD patch (6.0.2) druids no longer have control over which travel form they take. If the current zone is flyable, you will take Flight Form. If you're swimming, you'll take Aquatic Form. Your stag is gone except when you are in a non flyable zone.

If you want your stag, you'll need [item=40900], which makes Travel Form your stag and restores Flight Form as a separate shapeshift. But even with this glyph, you will automatically shift in and out of your Aquatic Form as you enter and leave the water.

Makes no sense to remove Cheetah and it makes no sense not to have that ground environment choice to go cheetah/stag or flight or any of our other forms. We shift shapes and multitask and not only can that make us deadly and survivable it makes us very very cool.

Now stag is cool but cheetah awed me from the start with my druid main and to this day still has that cool factor that makes me love being a druid. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I've rolled with the punches patch after patch for some years and it's all worked out and I've always had fun with my Druid but not this. It's taking too much fun and coolness out of the game. I've let Bliz know so all you cheetah druids should do the same thing.

Come on Bliz, change it back via glyph or whatever because you just took too much of the great feel away from being a Druid. Can handle any nerf but not this one to druid awesomeness.

ps my first post here so I'll thank everyone for the advice and tips I've found here over the years.

This is one of the abilities that make Druids so amazing at flag carrying. You throw a couple HoT's on you, shift to travel form, and run. Since shifting removes Movement Impairing Effects, you won't be slowed very long. Also, Travel Form is not dispellable, unlike Ghost Wolf. When you reach the tunnel, you can go Cat Form+Dash to cap the flag quickly.

Like many people have been hoping, in the Mists of Pandaria expansion, there will probably be a glyph that lets you be a stag in travel form! And people can ride you!
Glyph description from Mists of Pandaria 2012 Press Event: Full Monk Talents Revealed and more! - Wowhead News

Glyph of the Stag: Your Travel Form now appears as a Stag and can be used as a mount by party members.

Update: Travel Form is now a stag by default, however you still need the glyph in order to be used as a mount. There is another glyph that can change back into a cheetah, however this will not allow you to be ridden.

Cheetah top recorded speed= 77 mph. Elk top recorded speed= 53 mph. Human top recorded speed= 26 mph. Ever realize our characters always seem really lazy, never in a hurry when they are walking? Cheetahs keep up their speed for 20-30 seconds. Elks can run for miles. Humans can run for 30-40 seconds before slowing down. Elks would make more sense, making it faster wouldn't.

146819+8via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

The mount change to level 30 isn't quite as much of a nerf as people think, actually.
Advantages lvl 30 mount has over Travel Form:
-Moves faster
-There's some variety (Tauren/Night Elf Druids look the same in Travel Form, whereas on a mount you can have pretty much whatever your rep allows for)
Advantages Travel Form has over lvl 30 mount:
-Significantly cheaper
-You don't get knocked out of it when you get Dazed
-Usable in combat
-Instant Cast
-Mining/Herb gathering/Skinning can be done in Travel Form
-In WSG/EotS, you can grab the flag and use this to speed up; mounting will make you drop the flag
