Way back in beta the tram used to run in between IF and Darn, hence the water and the direction of it, but they were too lazy to change it lol.
Despite that Stormwind lies almost directly south of Ironforge, the tram track runs east - west on the mini-map. Furthermore, there are no bodies of water between the two cities even though the tram passes underwater.
