I was hoping for 'Gotta catch 'em all' for the title. I just hit pet #152 today.

This was summary of what is possible without RL-Money previous to MoP. Now, it is pretty useless. But heck, I won't just delete it :)

It is very well possible to get that Achievement without investing a cent, but it's not going to be easy.
Technically, you can obtain a maximum of 171 pets purely by ingame means (172 including the core hound which I highly recommend ;) ).

But there's a but. A few of them aren't obtaineable anymore: [item=44819], [item=41133], [item=49362], [item=37297], [item=38658]
Not included are all sorts of regional pets (correct me if I'm wrong please ^^), they aren't included in my assumed maximum either.

So if you start collecting today, without spending any money, that leaves you with a maximum of 166 (167 if you add the core hound, which I... well you know it ^^). But there's another but... You may need to collect children's week pets, which takes up to 4 years if you need all of them. You'll most likely need some, if not all, of the other seasonal world event pets as well, which takes up to one year. So be prepared for a long, long journey. Arriving to the point when of all pets, only those are missing, takes tons of dedication and luck anyways. A lot of new pets came with the DMF in 4.3, and another two lanterns were introduced with the Lunar festival.
