All things considered, she dies in a pretty horrible way.

As if being possessed and mind-raped by parasitic spores growing in her brain wasn't enough, when we fight her she desperately tries to kill herself (and us) with her spells, all the while we're beating her to death.

And then with her dying breath she tells us to burn her body, so it won't spread and happen to anyone else.

I'm pretty sure that's a horror movie plot right there. Poor Sol. :(

How is this game still rated 13? :P

Challenge Mode Guide:

First of all, eff you Archmage Sol. She is literally the only hard part of the entire CM.

Now, let me explain our strategy and why we chose it. She has three phases- Fire, Ice and Arcane, each with a special ability (fire rings, blizzards, and arcane explosion) that you're probably familiar with from Heroic. She starts in Fire, and every time you interrupt the spell "Parasitic Growth" (PG) she switches phases. If PG goes through she gets a bunch of extra damage, so it seems like you would want to interrupt it every time. However there's one big wrinkle for CM- we found that the Arcane phase is basically unhealable. If your healer is amazing and you chain cooldowns you might make it through, but it's a lot of damage. We found it best to interrupt her only once and then leave her in Frost for the rest of the fight by letting all subsequent PG casts through. However, this means she steadily deals more damage from stacks of PG (did I mention it stacks?), so the fight has a soft enrage of enrage of around 2 minutes before she'll start one-shotting the tank. This also means that her AoE abilities start to hit really hard near the end, leaving a smaller margin of error for the entire party.

So here's what we did:
1) Pull the Archmage towards the path you came in on. Don't pull her too far or she will despawn.
2) While in Fire phase she will drop fire blossoms under people's feet which will emit the fire rings. She seems to prefer ranged targets, so have the healer and any ranged dps drop them somewhere along the path.
3) Shortly after she drops two fire blossoms, she will cast PG for the first time. Interrupt the spell, which will push her into Frost.
4) After interrupting her, move the boss away from the entrance towards the middle of the room. The fire rings have a limited range of maybe 30 yards from the blossom, so once you're far enough away you can forget about them for the rest of the fight which makes positioning a lot easier.
5) Around this time she will spawn her first spore clone, which will spam your group with spells. They have a lot of HP so don't bother attacking them, and are unfortunately immune to hard CCs. However, you can stun, interrupt and knock them back. Don't dedicate too much time and attention to this, but every spell you keep from going off will help your healer out, and believe me he/she is going to be super-stressed by the end of the fight.
6) The rest of the fight is a DPS race, as you ignore PG casts and burn her before the damage gets to be too much. Be sure to avoid blizzards, green swirls, all the garbage the plant walls have been shooting at you all instance (fire and sleep), and all the random vines and doodads that the devs decided to fill the room with for some reason. Move the boss regularly so you avoid getting trapped in by blizzards. She will also keep spawning clones; not much you can do about this. Use any avoidance and DPS cooldowns, and finally note that she can be kited for some time if you interrupt her, which is how we got our kill.

Another option would be to leave her in fire phase the whole fight. However, the fire rings seem to have really poor collision detection and her fireballs leave a nasty stacking DoT, so we decided to do Frost instead. If you try out keeping her in Fire, leave a comment so we know how it goes.

Yet another option would be to push through the arcane phase with gobs of healing and cooldowns. As mentioned above it strikes me as really difficult, but possibly doable. In this case though you definitely won't make it through a second arcane phase, because every cast of PG gives her a 25% increase to damage even if you do interrupt her. Either leave her in a second Frost phase, or kill her really fast.

Good Luck!
