Quest doesn't seem to work as of 2023-05-12.
Bugged again on 2023-05-16 EU, thanks blizz....Tried everything including:
- Reloading
- Disabling all addons
- Abandoning & Picking up the quest again
- Ride Slick out of the zone and ride them back in
- Perfectly aligning Slick on one of the markers
- Doing a lap first (as the quest states)
- Deleting Slick from my bags & Getting a new one
- Reloading while on Slick
- Dying
You CAN dismount Slick and dragonride/sprint/reg. mount to the next marker. You don't have to creep along after the speed boost runs out.
Restless Wetlands (Waking Shores): A couple markers are near hostile water droplets/murlocs.
Wanderer's Steppe (Ohn'ahran Plains): Most markers are near neutral mobs.
Upper Frostlands (Azure Span): Some markers are near hostile bears/bakar.
Shifting Sands (Thaldraszus): One marker is near several hostile time-lost.Completed on May 24, 2023.

While life in these caverns is plenty exciting, Slick has a future in the world above. Namely as your trusty mount. Which means he needs to prepare for all sorts of environments. Luckily, the Dragon Isles has biomes to spare. Why don't you take him for a spin? Give him a taste of what's to come. One lap per location should do the trick.
