TheWoWDBYou don't need to use the spear at all. You can just attack the carp yourself and loot them.

Using the spear requires you to be facing the school of carp you wish to collect and to be at approximately the correct distance, about 25 yards. I could not get it to spear fish at close range, even when it passed through their bodies. Instead it seemed to affect only those fish that were at roughly the same depth as me and at a distance where the spear's arc would hit them. You can kill an entire school of 5 quickly and collect them all at once.
Actually using the spear is harder. Dont use the spear and just kill the armored carp
