The trick is to press the item multiple times at the shield locations.
Just run a circle around them and press the button a few times.
You will be able to get 10-15 Coins out of every spot.
To clarify, don't just stand at the signs. Also run around the entire indicated area around each sign to get more coins.
The trick for doing this quest is to go around and keep buff from quest item active. Don't just loot coins from signs.
