takes a while to kill them, but do it with the other quest "The Softest Wings"
My best lucked seemed to be with letting the Larva metamorph and split open. Not only did the drop rate for the cocoons seem higher for me then, but the Silkwings that emerge in this event drop the Iridescent Wings for http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10618, allowing you to complete both quests with more efficiency .

Description
The silk from the cocoons of the silkwings are used for all manner of things in the village. We can never get enough, and we never have enough. It is difficult to harvest the cocoons from the larva once they begin the process of metamorphosis. Our warriors are occupied with the assault on our village. If you could gather these for us, that would be helpful.
