Where you hear it

itellmessage.ogg is the private-message alert of World of Warcraft, named after the /tell command that whispers grew out of. It plays once per incoming whisper and is deliberately tiny so that busy conversations do not become noise. Trade negotiations, guild invites and 'are you coming to raid?' messages all arrive with it. Battle.net whispers from friends in other games use a separate toast sound. Its meaning maps so cleanly onto phone messaging that it is one of the most downloaded WoW tones.

Use it as

Ringtone

On a phone call the 0.4-second Whisper Received clip is over in a blink, so set it to loop and let it repeat until you answer.

Notification sound

Over a text, a 0.4-second blip that already means 'someone messaged you' registers instantly and is hard to confuse with a stock phone chime.

Discord soundboard

On a soundboard the 0.4-second Whisper Received clip lands and finishes before anyone has to stop talking.

iPhone

  1. Tap iPhone ringtone (.m4r) above and choose Download.
  2. Open the Files app, go to Downloads and open the file.
  3. Tap Share, then Use as Ringtone (iOS 26).
  4. Pick it in Settings, Sounds & Haptics, Ringtone or Text Tone.

  1. Tap Download MP3 above.
  2. Open Settings, Sound & vibration, then Phone ringtone or Default notification sound.
  3. Tap My sounds, then +, and pick the MP3 from Downloads.

Discord

  1. Download the OGG or MP3 above.
  2. Open Server Settings, Soundboard, Upload Sound, and pick the file.
  3. Name it and choose an emoji. You need the Manage Expressions permission.

Discord takes clips up to 5.2 seconds and 512 KB; this one fits.

Windows

  1. Windows sound schemes only take WAV files, so convert the MP3 to WAV first (Audacity or any audio converter does it in one export).
  2. Open Settings, System, Sound, More sound settings, then the Sounds tab.
  3. Pick an event such as Notification, click Browse, choose the WAV, then Apply.

OBS alert

  1. Download the MP3 above.
  2. In your alert tool (Streamlabs or StreamElements) set it as the alert sound file.
  3. Or in OBS add a Media Source with the MP3, untick Loop, and fire it with a hotkey.
