OK... had to do some looking up:
Archaeology: Meant to be used as a pass time
Loot: Practically everything. A new hearth, new mounts, new pets, BoA weapons that are ONLY lv 85 (no scaling), and more.
How it works: Go to your map. Should show you some locations, which vary on your level (ex., a lv 20 won't be sent to Tanaris). Click on that location (ex, Tanaris). That will show you a red-shaded area, where there can be artifacts... but the regions can be HUGE. Go there and use "Survey". A little telescope and light (looks Gnomish) will spawn. It points in a direction--that's where you have to follow. The light's an indicator. Red=you have a loooooong way buddy. Yellow=you're getting there. Green=close--about 40ish yards. NOTE: People have different spots, so there's no competition. Once you get within like 5 yards and use Survey, a fragment comes up, and you can loot it. Also note that the direction might change-- the device does a very good navigation job-- it won't send you through a wall, but around it (usually), for example.
Once you get enough fragments (any can be obtained at any level), you can use it to "discover" whatever your working on. HOWEVER, some fragments may be obtainable, but unusable until higher archaeology levels. There are different races to go through, and that's how the fragments are organized.
Good luck and happy hunting!

Ya, I posted that when not much info was known at the time. Anyhow, another neat note: Digging up finds gives XP. On my lv 72 DK, I get over 10k XP per find. I can usually find all 3 per zone in just a few mins. 10k XP is about 1/2 of a Northrend quest turn-in at my lv. So, I'd say this is an excellent way to level up, especially at higher levels. Only problem is travel time, but travel smart. A lot of places can be gotten faster through this: Port to any major city Port to Caverns of Time via Dal Port to Dark Portal via major city Port to Theramore/Swamp of Sorrows Port to Eastern Plagueland
Archaeology rocks.
I really dig it!
