Do you have to sniff them out before completing the dig? The first time I didn't find one, I was focused on the puzzle and completed the dig before sniffing around and wasn't able to get the special item.
It does give credit with your alts, i finished this achievement without waiting the reset, by bringing 3 more alts. Each one had a different event, and discovered a new object.
