Yes I was confused at first - even abandoned the quest and accepted again - because they say Clefthoof-in-Training but give you the whistle to summon an Icehoof-in-Training. Of course they are both 'cleft hoof' animals but it was a little ambiguous.
Do not summon your demon, hunter pet, or water elemental - you will be dismounted.
