Just in case anyone is as brain dead as me - go right when you enter the cave and go up the slope and around to the back. I was swimming in the water for a while wondering where the ward was.

I would never do something so silly. Had I done it, I definitely wouldn't have proceeded by being even sillier, trying to dive to the bottom of the water, and then attempting to relog for a couple of times. HAD I done something so silly however, I'd probably end up reading Wowhead comments in which case your post would have been a blessing. Luckily, nothing of the kind happened. I just came here by chance.
After you transformed into stone brogbar, you have to slay some mobs.
When dealt with those who are outside, move to a cave at 41.3 72.4 spot.
After that, when the task changed to place the ward, follow the path up.
Proceed to the end of path and place the ward on the ground.TomTom:

Description
Spiritwalkers maintain balance between the world of the living and the spirit realm. We can travel into the memories of the dead to glean clues about the past. The wards Ebonhorn maintained were placed long ago by heroes who fought the darkness. By walking in their footsteps, we may locate the wards and restore them. Igrul, the drogbar known as the Scalebane, was a true friend to Huln Highmountain. Use the Water of Vision to enter his memories and find where he placed the first ward.
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Minions of the Darkness
Oenia Skyhorn was a legendary chieftain of her tribe. Though she crossed over to the spirit realm long ago, her presence is still felt all around us. Ebonhorn told me that Oenia placed a ward here to protect the people she cared for so deeply... perhaps from the specter of the Darkness.
