I went for the DK Fae (as unpopular as it is, I think it looks more fun). When testing the ability (before making a solid covenant choice) the Defile talent overrides the tooltip and the appearance of Death's Due. When you solidify your choice as Fae and have the Defile talent, both the spell appearance and tooltip have the Fae effect proper.
