I love what Blizzard did with this place!
When I was wandering though the zone, I really had the feeling which I think Blizzard tryed to give to players: That of a dark knight, serving a evil order, that attacks the village of defenseless humans... the atmosphere is incredible!

Even if you don't intend to level up a Death Knight until the 80s, you must do the Death Knight quests, as Blizzard did an incredible job when they created this zone!

Ebon Hold is the deathknight class starting zone. It's here where you'll learn more about your abilities, do quests to earn talent points and if you do all the quests you'll have about a T1 level set when you're done and leave the area.

Interesting to note, you'll encounter friendly NPCs such as Baron Rivendare and others.

It's not set before the Frozen Throne. It's set sometime between the Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King (there are draenei and blood elves amongst the death knights).

The story setup/timeline seems to be something like this:

First, the attack on Stratholme, or at least the killing of Rivendare, doesn't officially happen until after the formation of the Knights of the Ebon Blade, as he's still alive in Acherus. It's also possible that he was raised, though decapitation is supposed to prevent that.

The seige on Naxxramas did happen. Kel'thuzad was defeated and his phylactery taken, but it was given to Father Inigo Montoy, a "false agent" of the Argent Dawn. This allowed Kel'thuzad to be resurrected, and Naxxramas is now relocated to the Dragonblight. It appears that the bosses weren't killed, or at least, have been raised from the dead. The only boss not returning to the relocated Naxxramas is Highlord Alexandros Mograine, who is stated by a relocated Commander Eligor Dawnbringer as having vanished without a trace following the events in the Plaguelands. It's also stated the identity of his replacement is still unknown.

Tirion Fordring has reclaimed his status as a paladin.

Most major events involving Light's Hope Chapel and Tyr's Hand have officially taken place. Havenshire, New Avalon, and King's Harbor were, officially, always connected to Tyr's Hand, despite not appearing in-game.

The questline surrounding Ashbringer and Alexandros' son (possibly Darion) who was supposedly in Outland may have been dropped. It's hard to tell, right now. The upcoming Ashbringer comic mini-series may clarify these events.

This is where the questline listed by Mumpley begins. The final quest, The Light of Dawn, has been stated by a blue on the beta forums to not be finalized; a more smoothe transition into present EPL is planned to be implemented in time.

Following the Death Knight questline, Darion forms the Knights of the Ebon Blade and they take over Acherus, and many important NPCs from EPL reform into new groups and head to Northrend.

  • A Sort Of Homecoming: “Return to Thassarian at the Scarlet Tavern and let him know that Koltira's cry for vengeance has been answered.”
  • A Special Surprise: “We got here, tore the place apart, and headed toward the prison house. We weren't expecting what we found in there, {name}.”
  • Ambush At The Overlook: “While you were out burning churches and murdering vermin, I've been busy formulating a plan.”
  • An Attack Of Opportunity: “Only the Scarlet forces at New Avalon and Light's Point challenge us! The time to attack the Scarlet fleet at Light's Point has come.”
  • An End To All Things...: “You have slaughtered legions beyond number and still your dark heart craves more. Your hunger knows no end, {name}.”
  • Behind Scarlet Lines: “I have sent Orbaz, Thassarian and Koltira behind enemy lines to search for the courier. They have set up a base of operations at the Scarlet Tavern, located at the southern end of New Avalon.”
