You are wrong. The modification only affects Glory of the Icecrown Raider (10 player).
- The Glory of the Icecrown Raider (10 player) meta achievement no longer requires Neck-Deep in Vile to be completed.

I did this achievement today in a ranged-heavy 25m pug group, and we did this achievement WITHOUT seeing any spirit spawn at all by zerging (so we pretty much cheesed it by skipping all the mechanics other than the Necrotic Plague).
Since we did this achievement along with Been Waiting a Long Time for This (25 player), we had to hold our dps at ~80% on LK and wait for the disease to stack, thus everyone's CDs were probably off CD in the mean time.
Once LK reached 70% (first transition phase), we all popped CDs and heroism and literally zerged LK from 70% health to 40% health DURING the transition phase, and continued to zerg him all the way down to 10% without having to deal with any Defile or Vile Spirits at all.
What happens there when we directly push him down from 70% to 40% during transitions is the entire phase 2 (the phase with defile and val'kyrs) gets skipped and he continued straight onto his 2nd transition (the outer platform shows the cracking animation but does NOT disappear, so it's safe to stay on them). And since we also pushed him from 40% directly down to 10% during the 2nd transition as well, the ENTIRE 3rd phase was skipped, thus no spirit spawned at all.
This is pretty much what Fraan did except we skipped both phase 2 and phase 3, making the achievement and the encounter extremely easy.
When in doubt, ZERG!
Hey everyone, I just wanted to post a new strategy that works as of 4.0.1. With the release of the most recent patch, all spells were increased to a 40 yard range. What this means is, ranged dps can attack the Lich King during the second phase transition by standing on the edge of Remorseless Winter. This dramatically decreases the difficulty of getting this achievement. I'll break down the strategy we used.
Raid Comp:
We had a few of our healers switch to dps offspecs to add a bit of dps. (Priority to ranged DD since they dps during transition).
Tanks: Death Knight and Prot Paladin
Melee: 9
Ranged dps: 10
Healers: 4 (Disc, resto druid, hpally, holy priest)End of phase two:
Work your way to the edge of the platform as you normally do. The Lich King will reach the middle of the platform and as soon as your ranged dps are safely out of Remorseless Winter, turn and start blowing up the Lich King.
BLOODLUST
Melee dps: Your goal here is to down two of the four Raging Spirits before the phase change occurs again. This is easy enough to accomplish without the help of your ranged.
Tanks: Make sure you dont silence the ranged dps by turning the spirits as this causes them to lose a lot of dps.
Ranged: Pewpew Lich King.
End of second transition (and your brief Phase 3):
Everyone hop back onto the platform before the edge breaks. Bring the Lich King to the platform edge that you just transitioned from (to allow for more melee dps up time and to ensure the furthest possible travel distance for the vile spirits).
Have your offtank take the two remaining Raging Spirits off to the side and slowly drag them to the opposite edge of the platform, ensuring that he doesnt silence half the raid.
Have your ranged dps and healers start making their way to the middle of the platform and continue damaging the Lich King while you wait for him to cast Vile Spirits.
Once he casts Vile Spirits, move the Lich King to the OPPOSITE edge to where you are currently. Have your Death Knights cast Army of the Dead below the Vile Spirits. The Army of the Dead will cause the vile spirits to stay in place, giving you enough time to drop the Lich King his final percentage points.
With my guild's dps, we managed to take him close to 20% (13 million, whatever % that is) by the time we jumped over and started phase three, and with our melee dps and ranged on the Lich King, we dropped him before the Vile Spirits even started to move in our direction. We finished off the Lich King fairly quickly and once he casts Fury of the Frostmourne, it's game over.
Doing it this way almost feels like cheating, as it was so much easier and such a relief after struggling with this achievement for a few weeks. I hope this helps any guild still stuck on this achievement, and congrats on your 25 man Drake :)
So in classic WOLTK fashion, when in doubt, ZERG IT DOWN!
