You can get past him without fighting if you vanish or have some other way to break combat. The problem lies in the door that doesn't open until he is defeated. Not sure why this was rated down. I know it cause I did it. I wasn't contradicting but clarifying so that someone else doesn't see if they can get past him solo after reading the parent comment like I did.
Note the "after you kill Skadi." You can't get to him unless you kill Skadi, and thus you will most likely need a group.
