If Taran Zun ditches you, then you can drop the quest and start it again just before the hollow treestump-bridge leading into Dread Wastes (near to where you fought the Mantid mini-boss with Ironbelly).

Good tip! This happened to me. I dropped the quest, but Taran didn't reappear at the tree bridge and reload didn't work. Logged out and back in and the NPC's with the quest were back.
