Possibly a reference to the classic Star Trek episode The Cloud Minders. There's a line most people seem to remember as "Dig, like the Troglytes do, with your bare hands." (Although the real quote is "as the Troglytes do", not "like the Troglytes do"). Anyway, this toy lets you dig, like the Niffen do, with your bare hands.
