Interacting with the book randomly summons one of a list of enemies. The banshee option, Osthilde, summons translucent purple Death Skitterers if left alive long enough, which can be tamed by hunters. These count as pets from the Spider family, not the Spirit Beast family as they appear.

If the shredder is bugged for you, you can join random groups on other shards through the LFG-tool to finish the quest.
