Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza

Just wanted to point out, since it wasn't totally clear for me: It starts 14:00 CET on EU servers.

Ok so i have done this quest many times now and have won four times so i am going to share my knowledge.
First off, I will put this at the top since it's most important.
IF YOU SEE A MESSAGE SAYING THE EVENT IS OVER, KEEP FISHING AND TRY TO TURN IT IN ANYWAY!
I am seeing a lot of comments floating around from people who are upset that the event ended so fast and they never went back to the NPC to be sure, so let me clear something up for you. In this new world quest version I believe it is the first FIFTY people that can choose a prize. I can't recall if it is the first fifty in your region or first 50 on the server, (also WM and normal seem to be separate) but either way it seems that it's just the old style message bugging out when it tells you the event is done. You will actually hear him make the same announcement several times in a row if you stick around so don't give up until you have all your fish and check with the NPC.

Ok now that that is out of the way here is the rest of the info.

Fishing skill matters
Even though it's considered low level fishing, the higher your fishing skill the more likely you are to fish up Tasty Fish. I noticed a slight decrease in my fishing luck when I accidentally let my buffs lapse. It was not such a huge loss that it cost me the contest, but the buffs were clearly helping. For my maxed out fishing setup i used:
Captain Rumseys lager.(+5) (buff time stacks up to 15 min and the tipsiness goes away fast. It's easy to make)
Nats drinking hat 8+ base plus a 10min lure that adds another +10 (WoD version is best but the Mop version is a good alternative) If you don't have a hat with a built in lure, get some worm supreme, darkmoon doughnuts or a Heat treated lure for a +10 bonus. Lasts 10 min.
A pair of cheap gloves that I enchanted with the Angler enchant. +5 (this is very easy to get on your own if there is nothing on the AH.)
Sharpened Tuskarr spear +5 (the buff area won't move from where you set it down and has a 10 min cd so use it on your first pool then leave it, dropping it at the next pool whenever it's off cd. Otherwise you can just skip this one)
Underlight Angler. +15. This is the best fishing pole in the game but there are plenty of alternatives that are almost as good at +14 or +13. Do some research and see what you can grab.
If you have them from a previous win, Boots of the Bay will give you +10
And lastly I got some Ancient Fishing Line from Slithon the Last.
In total i had 254 fishing and your absolute max right now is 264 fishing with the boots.

Rewards:
some of these rewards are better than others and with the revamp, I don't think they have a second place prize pool anymore? I think all 50 players get to choose from the “first place” selection. Or at the very least there are several “first place” winners before they move down to second place. (winners please correct me if i'm wrong) So here is some info on the loot for your consideration.
The fishing line can be won from turning in a queenfish, plus there is a better fishing line and pole in the game so I wouldn't recommend wasting a win on them. The boots of the bay could help you in future fishing contests if you plan to do this more than once. The fish trinket has better counterparts out there but it is still a fun vanity item. Also idk if they still have first and second places now that it's a world quest but if they do, the fishing trinket can only be claimed by first place winners whereas the ring and boots could be won by second place, so you may want to prioritize if you are a collector.
Obviously if you are only doing this for the ring then choose the ring. But if second place still exists the ring should still be an option for that while other items would not be.

What Time should I be there?
2pm PST. The event does not use server time so be sure to convert your time properly.

Can I win more than once?
Yes. Once per week on one toon, likely more than once a day if you have alts and are really lucky. But if you try to win two prizes on the same toon, the fish stop showing up. You will need to wait until next week to try again. (maybe you can collect 80 then turn them both in? Have not tried it)

How to Win
Consider the item you want and the toon you will use: Obviously if you just want the ring then you can prep a toon on a low pop server. However the rest of the items are bop so only do this on a toon that can use the prize you want. A highmountain druid is the best for fishing since they can proc double fish and druid flight has no cast time. Though i won this on my nelf hunter without much fuss since she had good fishing skill and i wanted all the buff items on her. consider your options.
Get your buffs ready: as explained above. Don’t forget water walking!
Consider how busy it will be: Is the xpack in a lul right now? everyone preoccupied with something new? might be a good time to fish.
Turn on WM: seriously, this is possibly the most important thing. Obviously do a little scouting ahead of time if you have a high pop server but the difference is drastic. You likely won't run into too much trouble. Each time I used WM I only ever ran into two other players but when I turned off WM there were 15+ by the quest giver alone. + if you lose on WM you could always phase back into WM Off at the inn and check that version of the npc to see if he has any prizes left.
Find a good fishing spot: Do NOT go to the beach with all the bloodsail. Everyone goes there. Obviously you should scout a bit ahead of time but i found that the top half of strangelthorn jungle was best. I started by the nesingwary camp and worked my way into the lake, then back up to the camp since the pools respawn quickly. Even when i had competition i just had to move down river a bit more.
Set your hearth: set your hearth to BB or use the boots if you have them. That way you can teleport right next to the quest giver.
Only fish in pools: tasty fish don't drop in open water. They will drop from all fishing pools in STV though, even wreckage. And upper STV still counts even though it's technically its own zone now.
Have track fishing: this will make your hunt for pools so much faster if you can get it.
Don't fight over pools: unless it's really crowded i highly recommend you don't do this. It can start fights, which are dangerous in WM and ultimately you are decreasing your fishing speed while someone out there who is not fighting for pools gets to keep reeling them in. So even if you slow down That One Guy, everyone else will outfish you.
Have sound on: make sure you can hear that bobber!
Tasty fish appear 1 min after the hour: you can potentially get a head start by casting just before the ?:01 mark so that you pull a fish in right as the announcement goes up .

"The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is scheduled to start at 2 PM PST so that would be 5 PM EST for you. The first 50 players will receive the Master Angler of Azeroth achievement and prizes!"

This event is now a world quest that starts in both areas of Stranglethorn Vale at 2PM PST. Server time does not matter. Make sure you set your hearthstone to Booty Bay after you collect your 40 fish. Good luck!
