Warning: do NOT try to fight your way up. The NPCs do help, but you can get swarmed by a dozen goren at once. Got my bodyguard and myself killed. I went back to the base of the ascent to pick up Drek'thar again per the quest text, but this time I mounted up and rode to the side -- I had better luck on the left than the right -- avoiding as much aggro as possible (you will get some, just keep going up). Once I got to the level with Exurotus, I got out of combat with the goren.
If your quest bugs at the top of the hill and you can't turn in the quest abandon it and return to Drek'Thar at the bottom of the hill to do it over.

Description
I can feel the voice of the Fury at the top of the ascent. Come, let us climb these stairs together. Be on your guard. The goren of this area are likely to be drawn by the smell of a shaman. If we get separated, fall back to the base of the stairs and regroup.
