Here is my Quicklist Guide to the Cataclysm Section of the Pet Trainer Quests. This is a quick reference to see what type of pets you will need to defeat the trainers easily. On Trainers who have the same type of pet for all 3 pets in their party, I would recommend you bring at least two pets that are the opposite type (i.e. bring three appropriate leveled Mechanical types to fight three trainer Beasts). Don't rely on fighting all three of their pets with just one of yours, despite the fact that they will have stronger attacks and defeat them quicker.

Cataclysm Trainer Quest Line

To defeat these trainers with maximum efficiency, you will need pets of the following type:
Beast, Dragonkin, Aquatic, Mechanical

Brok – Mount Hyjal – Level 25
Quickteam List – Beast, Dragonkin
Pet 1: Ashtail – Critter – Use Beast
Pet 2: Kali – Magic – Use Dragonkin
Pet 3: Incinderous – Critter – Use Beast

Bordin Steadyfist – Deepholm – Level 25
Quickteam List – Aquatic, Beast
Pet 1: Ruby – Elemental – Use Aquatic
Pet 2: Crystallus – Critter – Use Beast
Pet 3: Fracture – Elemental – Use Aquatic

Goz Banefury – Twilight Highlands – Level 25
Quickteam List – Aquatic, Dragonkin, Mechanical
Pet 1: Twilight – Elemental – Use Aquatic
Pet 2: Amythel – Magic – Use Dragonkin
Pet 3: Helios – Beast – Use Mechanical

*Author's Note: In writing this guide, I used various references from wowhead and warcraftpets.com. I did not write this guide as I was doing each trainer. Some information might be wrong. Please feel free to comment and I will change it as needed.

Bordin Steadyfist:

  • [npc=66804] - Critter

  • [npc=66805] - Elemental

  • [npc=66802] - Elemental

You'll probably want to have a critter considered a "roach" on your team because [npc=66804] uses [petability=519]. Although it's very possible to knock this out in less than 15 turns, he opens with this ability most of the time so you'll need to burn his pets in less than 15 turns. Beetles are also considered roaches for the purpose of this ability.

I suggest a fast pet for [npc=66804] because he uses [petability=155] so [petability=193] does extra damage OR consider a pet with [petability=566] to keep your speed up. [npc=63060] (or any Pandarian turtle) is a good choice because it has [petability=110] AND the elemental pets later in the fight will be weak against it. ([npc=63358] is also a good choice because it can have both Aquatic AND Beast abilities so is strong against all three of his pets.

Stack Aqatic pets for the two elementals (turtles, toads, or the previous suggested.) and you'll have no problem with the elemental pets (although you probably will lose at least one pet to [petability=263].

  • [npc=66809] - Beast

  • [npc=66810] - Magic

  • [npc=66811] - Elemental

Use any pet with Aquatic abilities to make quick work of the Elemental Pet (Any frog, toad or turtle, even [npc=62820]) [petability=482] hit's pretty hard and [petability=792] reduces healing, so you might forgo a HP focused healer for a damage focused Aquatic with [petability=230] for harder hits. [npc=12419] is a good choice for this fight too because [petability=482] does reduced damage against Mechanical. Try not to kill it while [petability=794] is up (because then it basically gets a couple rounds for free until it dies)... either switch pets or use a healing ability when it's up if you're close to killing it.

Any Dragonkin will eat his Magic pet alive. I prefer a pet with [petability=172], so I can use [petability=179] to burst down another one of his pets. ([npc=62621] is amazing for this fight because it has [petability=501] AND [petability=172], so he will make quick work of the magic pet and still have a double hit [petability=179] for the next pet. (Although he does have [petability=448] (Aquatic) that is strong against Elemental, it still does piddly damage.)

Any mechanical will do well against his Beast (I used ([npc=50468] or [npc=40703]) for [petability=387] and it was nearly dead before it hit the front line.) (Also, interesting to pair [petability=387] with [petability=204] for some serious back line damage against Beasts, so [npc=65324] isn't a bad choice for this fight either because it's [petability=115] is strong against Magic.)

Brok

  • [npc=66808] - Magic

  • [npc=66807] - Beast

  • [npc=66806] - Critter

Any Dragonkin will eat his Magic pet alive. I prefer a pet with [petability=172], so I can use [petability=179] to burst down another one of his pets. ([npc=62621] is amazing for this fight because it has [petability=501] AND [petability=172], so he will make quick work of two of his pets.)

If you've got a Mechanical pet that also has Beast moves ([npc=15699], [npc=50468], [npc=43916], [npc=2671], [npc=43800] or [npc=40703] all have [petability=202]) you'll have 1 pet strong against both his Critter and his Beast.

Nearest Stable Master: [npc=43408] (Horde/Alliance)

Grand Master Obalis:

Don't bother trying to bring a Mechanical for bonus damage against his Beast. [petability=152] does elemental damage, so it will do Strong damage against a Mechanical, so either bring a healing mechanical, or fight this pet with a neutral type. (Flying takes less Beast damage, so [npc=65185] isn't a bad choice because it can be tamed at a higher level (21-22)) Also one should consider [npc=65324] for this fight because of the bonus Mechanical damage it brings with [petability=204].

Spring is dispatched easily by any magic dealing pet (I used [npc=62994] because it has [petability=525] (although it took quite a lot of punishing from Flying moves being strong against Aquatic). [npc=62888] is the highest level capturable Magic pet that I could find to use, but I chose Emerald Turtle over it simply because I could tame one at a higher level and spend less time leveling it.

Before this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Grand Master PayneLevel 1-90

In my opinion, my fellow tamers have been far too lenient on your training. True pet taming requires militaristic discipline. I shall honor you with the pleasure of seeing firsthand what that discipline can produce.

After this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Grand Master ObalisLevel 1-90

You think yourself ready to challenge Pandaria? You truly believe that you can defeat the most powerful tamers in all of Azeroth? I shall be the judge of that notion, <race>. Face me atop the Vir'naal Dam in Uldum, and we shall see if you are truly ready.
