It appears that you cannot upgrade a Benthic token e.g. [item=169482] but only the armour that it creates.
As I plan to send my [item=169482] to an alt, this quest will have to wait.
If you get too excited and upgrade your piece of gear BEFORE you accept this quest, you'll need to farm 10 manapearls from rares in order to complete the quest (costs 10 to upgrade your new 400 piece).
