OK guys, the process that works 100% for this quest is:
1) Kill the Spiteful Spirit attacking the Shadow-Pan. Do this first, before anything else.
2) Cast the totem under your Shadow-Pan to save (which is now just sitting there not doing anything) <- IMPORTANT
3) Get under the totem so you don't get hatred.
4) Aggro and kill the Seething Hatreds that pop up from the ground. It's the Spiteful Spirits that are &*!@ing things up. If you don't clear them out first and instead go on to pop up the Hatreds, you won't get credit. I just confirmed this multiple times by intentially aggroing a Spirit while attacking a Hatred, each time I didn't get credit.
PLEASE vote this comment up, it will save people a lot of grief.

Perhaps you would like to go through this quest ignoring the mechanic and succumbing to your hatred. To be quite honest, that's fine. It is possible that you will then pass on a nice buff that increases haste, but it is still fine.
The only thing that will happen should you choose not to stand in the golden Pools of Harmony is your screen will become progressively more dull and grey while red filters into the sides of your vision, culminating in you spawning your own Seething Hatred at 100/100 Hatred. This Seething Hatred is a different model from the ones spawned when healing the monks, and you will not get credit towards the completion of the quest upon destroying your own mob. You will not lose your Hatred stacks until you defeat your inner Seething Hatred: upon the add's death, your Hatred will reset back to zero.
To open this quest you need to do the Fire Camp Osul chain starting at A Foot in the Door from Taran Zhu at Longying Outpost, and then continue with all the Hatred's Vice chain from Ban Bearheart.
I had previously done the Do a Barrel Roll chain for Lao Chin's Last Mug, but I think the linking quest is a breadcrumb rather than a prerequisite.

What to do
Description
I should have suspected a sha presence earlier! We are safe as long as we stand inside the Totem of Harmony's protective wards, but many of our people were not so lucky. They were trapped outside the camp when the sha's powers manifested, and now they turn upon each other! Take one of my totems with you. Place the totem near a crazed ally to purify them, but beware. You may have to face the darkness that gripped them.

The spirits of the fallen villagers have risen! I can feel the hatred emanating from the spirits. <name>, if we are to survive here, we must defend ourselves. This is the only way we can put them to rest.

- The Point of No Return
One of our rangers reported seeing Suna up the hill to the northwest. I am relieved to find her safe. I had feared what she would do in her grief. Would you go speak to her on my behalf? Take this totem with you. If you encounter any danger along the way, you may find it useful.
