Massive time sink if just in normal gear. Avoid it like the plague. Mobs have 8million health and you need to kill tons of them. I blew all my cds to get one at 558 item level and i got 1/5 for one cannon when three cannone are needed to be fixed So blow all CD's and do that 15 times in addition to wating for your CD to reset. This will take 45 min or more since you have to wait on CD's. Massive time sink for a solo player and not worth the time.
The reason it says gathering the fuel is optional, if you're grouped, your party can also refuel the drills! I recommend using the group finder in the area, it cuts this quest time in half or more!
To complete this quest:
- Kill mobs in the area and rescue [npc=223842]
- Loot [item=224292] (15 minute timer, use 3 to convert to Crystal) and [item=219522]
- You need a total of 15 Crystals between your group
- Bring them to /way The Ringing Deeps 68.10 52.06 Drills & Portal
- Click on all 3 drills x 5 each to refuel
- Click on portal in the same location
- Kill [npc=221316] in the cave
I hope this helps! There are many rares that spawn in this area, another great reason to group!
You don't need to fight any mobs. It is quicker to help the little wounded or stuck Earthen guys dotted around the area, e.g. by pulling them out of the ground. When you have helped them they place a Radiant Fuel Crystal down on the ground in front of you which you can click to 'loot'. Much quicker than killing mobs, who sometimes only drop fragments and as you say, take ages.

Step 2 of 2. Chain order is read from the prerequisite data in the current retail client build, so it reflects what the game requires, not a curated storyline. A step the build does not name is kept in place, unnamed, so the sequence stays complete.
Steps, storylines and map placement from the client’s QuestLine, prerequisite and QuestPOI data; neighbouring quest text is Blizzard’s own (quest API), shortened to its opening sentences.
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

Quests whose map markers the client places closest to this one on The Ringing Deeps, nearest first. Distances are straight lines between the markers.

Straight-line distances in yards between the quest’s own map markers (QuestPOI) and the client’s flight-point positions (TaxiNodes); flight paths and terrain are not modelled.
