I was in Icewing Caverns while trying to complete Proving Grounds (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=7162), and I got this quest complete. So I guess you can be anywhere in the battleground, as long as he is killed. :-)
Once you complete this quest by talking to Prospector Stonehewer, you will be able to continue on. Talk to her once again after completion and you will be able to choose 4 great items.

Description
The Explorers' League believes there are artifacts in Alterac Valley, but the Frostwolf orcs won't let us explore. We can't allow the Horde to stop our scholarly pursuits! Defeat the Frostwolf general, Drek'Thar. With him dead, the orcs will lose their edge. Drek'Thar is in Frostwolf Keep, in the south of Alterac Valley. Vanquish him, and then return to me.
