This quest chain is required to be able to do the caverns of time instance/events. You can't do the first one (Thralls Escape) without doing this quest. The second one, The Opening of the Dark Portal, cannot be done without doing the Thrall event. So in other words, you have to do this chain to even visit the CoT instances. :(
At level 60, you can't even see the greyed out exclemation point above the quest-giver.
If you screw up and forget to dismount, just abandon the quest and get it again.
